Brandon and Zachary had the chance to be a part of the Temple Cultural celebration. They started learning the music in December and then in January they began learning our regions dance- The Fire Dance.
This celebration was going to be HUGE, the biggest ever with over 12,00 kids participating. Due to the size, it was going to be broadcast to the Stake Centers and the local TV station was going to even carry it live on their secondary station and stream it online.
It all started coming together Saturday February 22nd with the one and only dress rehearsal. The celebration and the rehearsal were held at Discovery park, across from the temple. I happened to drive by during the rehearsal and to see all those kids out there brought tears to my eyes it was an amazing sight.
They started at 7am and were supposed to go until 10 pm. After dinner that night they ended up calling an end to the rehearsal. It was so dry and dusty out there they had kids dropping like flies form breathing problems.
These are all pictures from the rehearsal day. They are from different members of our ward and stake.
After the rehearsal and all of worries about the dust they revamped the performance day, to add more time to water the fields in between rehearsal, and moved start time from 7am to 1pm so the kids weren’t going to be out in the dust as long.
Little did they know they weren’t going to have that problem. We hadn’t had rain for over 70 days. But what was on the forecast for Saturday? RAIN and lots of it!!!! It was miraculous on Saturday to watch the storms split and go around the park. At one point it was pouring at Costco, but not the park!
Saturday since the weather was holding out Kristin Dearden and I decided to walk up there and see a few minutes of the dress rehearsal. We wanted to see it in person. We got there just as the rehearsal started and watched from the road for a few minutes. We got to see out region dance. It was so powerful, we both couldn’t hold back the tears just hearing all those kids sing!
Well, the weather held out through dinner and about 15 minutes before the start, while the kids were on the field waiting for President Monson and Elder Eyering to arrive it began to rain. It stopped for a few minutes as they arrived and thought it might be OK. It wasn’t meant to be though. It rained the whole performance! At time really coming down.
The kids said it didn’t matter. They were all so pumped up! They were singing songs about the gospel, in the shadow of the temple, to the prophet!
They were soaked to the bone when they got home.
It was such a great experience. I will add there accounts later.
