Zachary’s Eagle Project

While we were in Sacramento for Christmas we were able to do the first part of Zachary’s Eagle Project. Below is a summary of his project.

My project will be to document graves at the East Lawn Sacramento cemetery (where Grandpa Wallace, Great-Grandma Altop, and Great-Great Grandma and Grandpa Altop are buried).

We will take photos using an app on smartphones that imbeds a GPS coordinate in the picture.

Then at a later date we will transcribe/index the gravestone info from the photos onto a searchable website.

This will allow people from anywhere in the world to do Family History searching for ancestors buried at this cemetery.

And since the app gives a photo and GPS location of the grave, visitors can easily find the exact burial spot without help from the cemetery workers.

We had about 30 family members come out and help. We were able to do over 6,000 markers.

Next step will be to index the photos. Some family members are helping, but his troop back home will be helping too.

We have awesome family who came out in the cold and worked hard. Zach did a great job organizing it.

To end with these 2 cuties, who were my helpers with the hot chocolate and donuts!

Christmas

We spent Christmas in CA. It was lots of fun Christmas morning to spend it at the Cahoon’s.

Picture overload to follow.

Visit with Poppy

Today we loaded everyone up and headed out to Roseville to visit my Grandpa- Poppy. He was recently put into a care home. He was so glad to see us, he is having a hard time adjusting to not having a home anymore. I think we were a pleasant distraction.

The day before we had cleaned out some boxes that Sherrie took from his house and brought with us his high school yearbooks, some old photos and asked him some questions we had after reading some family history information.

I’m glad we got a chance to go and see him and take some pictures, since we don’t know how long he has left with us.

Ice Skating

After we left the care home home we went ice skating. Bob, and I have been years ago, and Brandon once or twice before too. The other kids not at all. Rachel was really nervous, so I just put on spikes so I could help her.

We net up with Lisa’s family too. It was fun to have more cousins there to skate with. Lisa didn’t skate so she took all of our pictures.

It was really fun. Even though Ethan had never been, he got the hang of it pretty fast. Then he and Grant were racing everywhere, they had a few spectacular wipe outs, they are going to have some serious bruises. After a few big spills, Zachary took the cautious route and stuck to using the buckets.

Everyone was tired when we left, but had a good time. Rachel wants to take some lessons back at home.

After the first hour the indoor rink closed and we spent the next hour on the outdoor rink.
